Chapter 27: After the Room
Nobody gasped.
A gasp would have been a kindness, a small human noise to break the quiet.
Two hundred people sat on white chairs and did nothing at all.
The judge closed his book, slowly.
Then the white-haired director walked to the front row and turned his back on the arch.
He faced the two other directors, who had been sitting with their wives and their gloves in their laps.
"Gentlemen," he said. "Under the bylaws, I believe we may convene."
"Here?" one of them said.
"Here is where the company is."
The vote took less than a minute.
He read the motion in a flat, tired voice that I think had been waiting thirty years to read it.
"To remove Albert Chadwick as chairman and chief executive of Chadwick and Rhodes, effective at once."
"Aye," said the second director, and then the third.
"Aye," said the old man himself.
"And to void the termination of Arlen Rhodes," he said, "which was procured on false grounds, and restore his seat and his shares."
Three more ayes.
He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
"We should have asked sooner," he said, to nobody. "It took a girl with a plastic bag."
My father stood under the arch, and I watched him not understand what had happened.
He was fifty-three and had never been voted out of anything in his life.
"You can't," he said. "I own seventy percent."
"You own seventy percent of a company that no longer wants you in its building," the director said gently. "Your attorney will explain the difference."
