Chapter 21: The Grove Opens
The grove gate came down at five in the morning, in the dark, with an iron bar and a lot of swearing.
Corwin did most of the swearing.
The six keys on my ring opened every lock but that one.
Sherman had welded the gate shut with silver.
The old man cut the weld with a hacksaw while the pack stood in the snow holding lanterns.
When it fell, nobody cheered.
They stood and looked through the arch at the field of gray bushes, and I heard somebody weeping softly in the dark.
"Forty-one pups," the old healer said, at my shoulder. "Come, apprentice."
"I'm a medical student."
"You are my apprentice, and I am ninety, and I do not have the time to argue."
She walked into the grove ahead of me, bent over her stick.
I followed with the tin box.
At first light the blackthorn opened.
It did not bloom the way flowers do in a garden.
It opened all at once.
Every bush in the field split white at the same instant.
