Chapter 13: The Unsaid Thing
Rina pulled her hand out of his.
It was the first time she had ever done it, and she saw him feel it.
"Elisenne," she said, and her voice came out flat and level. "How do I take it back?"
"You say it aloud. In your own words."
"Fine."
She turned to face Kaldrith, and she did not look at the horns or the amber eyes or the open shirt.
She looked at the black ring.
"I'm the one who was asked," Rina said. "I take it back. Whatever Wynne asked of you, it's done. You don't owe it."
The hall waited.
The ember lamp burned on the black table, and not one mark on his chest changed.
Kaldrith breathed in, slow and careful, and nothing happened to him at all.
"Again," Lysander said, low. "Perhaps louder."
"I take it back," Rina said, loud enough to echo off the vaulted ceiling. "I take it back, I take it back."
The ring stayed black.
Elisenne stepped close again and held her glowing palm flat over the marks.
She frowned, and tilted her head, and moved her hand a little to the left.
"There is a second line," she said. "It lies under the first and only shows in strong light."
"Read it," said Rina.
"Unsaid where the fire is owed, before those it is owed to."
Lysander went white around the mouth.
"The cathedral," he said. "The Frostfall Rite. The whole court stands in that nave."
"Then that's where I'll say it," said Rina.
She said it.
Then she turned to the Saint and the Crown Prince, and both of them stepped back.
"I'd like you both to leave us," she said. "Please."
They went.
The door closed, and the steward's footsteps went away down the corridor, and Rina and Kaldrith were alone with the long black table.
"Rina."
"Library," she said. "Now."
She did not wait for him.
She walked the length of the corridor in his oversized coat with her bare feet slapping the stone.
