Chapter 22: The Blade

The blade went into my arm.

I felt it slide along the bone above my elbow, cold first and then hot.

Lucan's grey eyes were right in front of mine.

For one second, they were wide with pure surprise.

Then the Emperor turned.

He didn't draw his sword.

He caught his brother's wrist in one hand and twisted, hard.

The blade rang on the marble.

"Now!" the Emperor shouted.

Six men threw off their white priests' robes along the back of the dais.

Black and gold underneath. Swords drawn.

The captain of the guard was the first one down the steps.

He had Lucan face down on the marble before anyone in the benches had finished screaming.

The Emperor caught me as my knees went.

He held me up against his chest with one arm and clamped his other hand over the cut on my arm.

Blood ran out between his fingers and down the white shift.

"I've got you," he said. "I've got you. Look at me."

I looked at him.

His face wasn't calm anymore.

"You said you'd be there before me," I said.
