Chapter 57: Buy Him Again

Nobody in the church moved.

The priest stood at the font with the silver shell still in his hand, dripping on the marble.

Three rows back, six old men were looking at me.

I understood it a second too late.

They weren't waiting to see what he'd do.

They were waiting to see what the Don would.

"Rule, Donna," Augusto said gently. "They're all here."

"I promised to hear it," I said. "I've heard it."

"And?"

"And the table sits on table business at the table."

I looked at him over my daughter's wet head.

"Not at her font. Not on her day."

Augusto bowed his head an inch, the way you'd nod at a girl who'd cut a straight seam.

"Of course, Donna. At the table."

He turned to the priest.

"Father. Forgive an old man. Finish."

The priest made the sign of the cross over all of us, very fast.

Halfway down the aisle, the boy on the two canes hadn't moved.

"Nonno," he said.

"Sit down, son," Augusto said. "Wait for me."

The boy looked at his grandfather down the whole length of the church.

Then he turned around and went back down the red carpet toward the big doors, and Rita went with him, her hand not quite on his arm.

My father stood in the aisle on his cane and watched them all the way out into the light.
