Stevie's POV

The Thayer Foundation held its fortieth anniversary dinner in the same ballroom where I had ended it with Caleb.

The same quartet sat on the same riser, and the chandeliers were turned down to a warm gold.

Two hundred people sat at round tables with white cloths, and Marguerite stood at the lectern in a long silver dress with her pearls.

My phone buzzed in my clutch.

Donna: Is it happening yet. The nurse says I can't have popcorn.

I typed back: Almost. Eat your Jell-O.

"As you know," Marguerite was saying, "my father-in-law founded this Foundation, and he cannot be with us tonight. Augustus is resting, and the family asks for your kindness and your privacy."

The quartet began a slow piece.

Caleb pushed the ballroom doors open.

He wore a clean gray shirt and held the handles of a wheelchair, and in the chair sat Gus in a black dinner jacket with his white hair combed flat.

The quartet stopped in the middle of a bar.

Every head near the door turned.

I walked beside the chair in my yellow sundress, the one that was mine, and Warner came on the other side in his tuxedo with the lawyer behind him.

Nobody in the room made a sound.

Caleb had stood in this doorway once with a pharmacy bag and watched me walk toward him.

This time he walked toward the stage with me beside him, and I did not look away from anyone.

"Augustus," Marguerite said.

Her voice was warm and carried well.

"What a lovely surprise. Warner, a chair for your grandfather at the head table."
