Chapter 11: Read It Out Loud
Boone called the whole club together at the clubhouse that Friday night, and he asked me to come.
I came in Birdie's pickup, because the doctor had cleared me to sit, and I sat on a bar stool with my feet on a crate.
It was the same room where I had hauled out my tools.
Forty bikers filled it from wall to wall.
Boone stood at the head of the long table with his arm in its sling and said nothing until everyone was quiet.
"I have something to say, and I'm only going to say it once."
Rusty leaned against the bar with a beer, easy and smiling.
Tawny sat beside him in a pink sweater with her hands in her lap.
"Tawny says she's carrying my child," Boone said. "I want a blood test before I put my name on it."
The room rustled.
Tawny's face went white and then red.
"You said you believed me."
"I said I'd listen."
"After everything?"
"After everything, I'd like to be sure."
Rusty set his beer down.
"Boone, brother, don't do this to a pregnant girl in front of the whole club."
"I'm not doing it to her. I'm doing it to the truth."
"You're being unfair."
"Maybe."
A chair scraped in the kitchen doorway.
Birdie Sykes stepped out with her dish towel on her shoulder and a cell phone in her hand.
It had a pink glitter case.
"Boone, I've got something to say too."
"Birdie," Rusty said sharply.
"Sit down, Rusty. You've done enough talking for twenty years."
The room went completely silent.
I saw Tawny's eyes go to the phone, and I saw her stand up so fast her chair fell over.
