Chapter 28: Ten Grand
The speaker was built for an outdoor rink.
It filled the room to the ceiling.
Ice clinked in a glass.
Then my own voice, sleepy, a year younger, asking about his rookie playoffs.
Then Dane's laugh. The real one. The ugly one.
"You want to know the truth about the playoffs, Greer? Write this down."
Four hundred people sat absolutely still.
The speakers carried the rest of it into every corner of the hall.
Somebody in the third row said, "Oh my God," out loud, and didn't seem to know she had.
The laugh again.
Then the snoring.
Beau pressed stop.
The guard who had my elbow let go of it.
For three long seconds, nobody in the room moved at all.
Then every camera turned at once, from me to the stage.
Dane was standing behind the signing table with both hands flat on a stack of his own books.
"That's fake," he said.
His voice cracked in the middle of the word.
"That's AI. She made that. Everybody knows she's..."
