Chapter 17: The Roof

The chimney bricks were still warm from the sun, and I had my back flat against them.

It was the second week of May, ten at night, and the flat tar roof ran out around us in the dark.

Past the parapet the runway lights of Midway lay in two long lines.

Cas was in Joliet on a boiler job and would not be back until morning.

I had picked the roof on purpose.

"Here's the thing about a plane," I said. "While it's overhead, you can't hear anything else."

"You've thought about this," Rudy said.

"I've thought about it since March."

Joey spread Stan's old army blanket on the tar and stood up with his shirt already open.

I was naked under my bus coat.

I let it fall behind me onto the blanket.

Both of them stopped moving.

I stood against the warm brick with the night air on my skin and my braid over one shoulder.

"Come here," I said. "Both of you."

They came.

Rudy kissed my mouth, and Joey kissed my neck, and their hands moved over me from two directions, big and rough and trembling.

A plane came down out of the dark with its landing lights on, and the roof shook.

I slid down the brick to my knees on the blanket.

Rudy's belt hit the tar, and Joey's zipper, and I looked up at them standing over me.

"Together," I said.

I took Rudy into my mouth and Joey into my hand, and then I switched.

I went back and forth between them, wet and slow, tasting each one, and the sounds they made stacked on top of each other.

Joey said please.

Rudy said Jesus, Renia, over and over, with his hand shaking in my hair.

I took them both against my lips at once, pressed side by side, my tongue sliding from one to the other.

"Oh my God," Rudy said, as the next plane roared over. "Oh my God, look at that."
