Chapter 19: Under His Hand

Rudy's POV

I am not good at being quiet, and I was trying very hard to be quiet in my father's shower.

The stall was green tile from 1978 and barely big enough for one man.

The hot water drummed on the wall.

Ren stood under it with her palms on the tile and her braid pinned up out of the spray.

She was eighteen weeks along on the last Saturday of August.

She had a curve on her now that I could not stop looking at.

It was small and tight and high, and it was mine.

It was ours.

I had to keep correcting that in my head.

"You're staring," she said, without turning around.

"I'm admiring."

"You're staring at my ass," she said.

"I'm admiring everything. It's a package."

She laughed, and the laugh went through the tile into my hands.

I stood behind her with a bar of soap, naked, with water running down my belly.

I had been washing her back for a long time.

I had gotten no further than her shoulders, because every time I stopped I kissed something.

"Rudy," she said. "Wash lower."

"Yes, ma'am."

I soaped my palms and ran them down her spine to the dip at the base of it, and slid them around her hips.

Her skin was slick and warm.

I slid them up and around the front of her, over the curve, and held it.

I felt her breathe.

"Say it," Ren said.

"Say what?"

"What you were going to say in the kitchen last night. Before you went quiet."

I put my forehead against the back of her wet neck.

"I'm afraid I'll be bad at it," I said.

"At what?"

"At him. Or her. At being somebody's father." I swallowed. "I'm the one who makes the joke. I'm the one who goes to the bar. My father drank, Renia. He threw a plate. I have his belly and his laugh. I think I have his temper somewhere, in a drawer. I don't know what it'll do at three in the morning with a baby who won't stop crying."
