Chapter 10: A TV of Us
I held her away from me so I could see her face.
"What TV, baby?"
"A flat one. On her lap." Tilly drew a square in the air. "At Grandma's house. It had our island house in it."
"What was in it?"
"You and me. Sleeping on the leaves." She frowned. "We were so dirty, Mommy."
"Did Aunt Kendra say that?"
Tilly nodded.
"She said, look how dirty you were. And she laughed."
I looked up.
Kendra was coming out of the courthouse doors with Bradley's mother on her arm, in her pale pink dress, putting on her sunglasses.
She saw Tilly in my arms.
She waved.
The detectives came to Nan's kitchen the next morning, the man and the woman.
Nan gave them pie whether they wanted it or not.
Eli laid his printout down in front of them. The fins, ten months of nothing. The June night. The Thurlow Coastal code.
I told them about the red light in the rafters. I told them about Tilly's TV.
She just listened, and at the end she said, "Thank you. We'll go out there."
They went out on Thursday.
The woman called me that night.
"There's no camera," she said. "There are four fresh screw holes in a rafter and a cut cable running out to a solar panel in the mangroves. Somebody took it down."
"Kendra."
"Ms. Vose says she's never owned a tablet in her life."
Then she told me the rest.
The motel had a camera too, in the parking lot.
It had caught two men carrying a woman and a child out to a van at two in the morning on the nineteenth of October.
Both men worked security for Thurlow Coastal.
One of them had a lawyer now, and the lawyer wanted a deal.
"He says Mr. Thurlow gave the order personally," the detective said. "One year. Food drops monthly. And bring her back when she's ready to say sorry."
