Chapter 13: Back Through the Gate
The Beta's fingers dug into my arm until I felt a stitch give.
I didn't make a sound.
I wasn't going to give Ansel that in front of three hundred people.
Beck moved.
Two enforcers stepped in front of him, shoulder to shoulder.
"Beck," I said. "Don't."
He stopped. His fists were white.
If he threw one punch in that hall, Ansel would call it an attack on the Alpha.
Then there'd be two of us in the caves.
Beck knew it as well as I did.
"Dad, no." Tobin came up the stairs two at a time. "Dad, I told you. I let him in. It was me."
"Go to your room, son."
"It's my birthday!"
"Then go enjoy it."
The Beta marched me down the stairs and through the hall.
People stepped back to let us pass.
The baker's daughter had her hand over her mouth.
The old elder from the square sat by the fireplace with both hands on his cane, and he didn't look away from me.
I made myself walk slowly.
At the oak doors I turned my head and found Beck over the crowd.
"Keep the porch light on," I said.
That was all I could give him.
They put me in the back of a pack truck between two enforcers who smelled like Ansel's wine.
