Chapter 24: Ketter Land
The chisel was my father's.
I'd found it in the root cellar in December, wrapped in an oiled rag in a coffee can, with his initials scratched into the handle.
On the morning of April eleventh, I carried it out to the two stones in the woods behind the cabin.
The larches had gone green overnight, the way they do.
The ground was soft and smelled of snowmelt.
Keir carried the mallet and a folding chair, because Gran had told him to.
"Sit," he said, and unfolded it in the needles.
"I'm pregnant, not ninety."
"Gran said sit."
"Gran isn't here."
"Gran," Keir said, "is everywhere."
I sat.
Not because he said so.
Because the baby had started doing somersaults at breakfast and hadn't stopped.
I knelt in front of my father's stone first.
I set the chisel and hit it.
The first chip flew off clean and white.
It took me most of the morning.
I cut my father's first name, and under it, KETTER, deep enough to last.
Then I moved to my mother's stone and did the same.
Keir didn't help.
