Chapter 28: Guilty

Imogen's POV

The courtroom was smaller than I expected, and fuller.

Reporters filled the back three rows, and I recognized the one who had held a microphone at my face on the museum steps.

Nathaniel sat beside me with both hands on his knees.

Bethany sat across the aisle in a plain gray dress, with Colby's letter in her lap, still sealed.

She looked at me once, and I nodded once, and that was all either of us could manage.

Two officers brought Colby in through the side door.

I had last seen him in a lab, smiling with a phone in his hand.

Now his orange jumpsuit hung off his shoulders, and his hair had been cut by someone who didn't care.

He looked at the floor until he reached the table.

Then he lifted his head and found Nathaniel, and his face broke.

"All rise," the bailiff said.

The judge was a thin woman with reading glasses, and she opened the file without ceremony.

"Mr. Lathrop, I understand you wish to change your plea."

"Yes, Your Honor."

"Before you do," a man's voice said, behind us, "I must object."

A lawyer in a very good navy suit had stood up in the second row.

I knew him from the boardroom, where he had sat at Gerald's elbow.

"I represent the family," he said. "My client is concerned for Colby's mental state. He has been under extreme strain. He may not understand what he is about to say."

I heard Nathaniel's breath leave him.

It was the same sentence Colby had said to forty dinner guests, with my video still playing on the wall.

She is unwell.

"Counsel," the judge said, "which client?"

"Gerald Lathrop."

"Mr. Gerald Lathrop is not a party to this plea. He is a defendant in another matter. Sit down."
