Chapter 15: The Memorial
The Dar quarters on ring four smelled of smoke and cold metal and something sweet I couldn't name.
Ysmae walked me through them without a word.
Dar stood in the corridors and watched us pass.
Some of them knew my face from the wanted screens, and I made myself look back at every one.
"They do not know what you are," Ysmae said, not turning her head. "They know you flew the warlord."
"Is that better or worse?"
"It is not yet either."
She stopped at a pair of tall doors with no handles and put her palm on the plate.
They opened on a long hall, and I forgot how to walk.
The walls were light.
From the floor to the ceiling, four storeys up, names glowed in soft gold script, row on row, column on column, so many that the hall seemed to hum with them.
"Eleven thousand," Ysmae said. "Every one who lived at Orrun Deep."
"It took us seven years to learn them all."
