Chapter 18: His Terms
Ysmae gave us her own cabin on the Ember, and a look that said she'd heard everything.
The bed was built for Dar.
It was as wide as a cargo hatch.
The first thing I did was lie across it sideways with my arms spread.
"There's room," I said. "For once there's room for both of us."
Havrik smiled in the doorway.
"I will not point out that you are still on the diagonal."
Down in the hold, through three decks, Piet Haldane was snoring.
I got my father's log pad out of my jacket.
It was real paper, a pilot's habit I couldn't break, with a pen clipped to the spine.
I sat at the little Dar desk and wrote.
He watched me from the end of the bed, with his hands between his knees.
"What are you writing?" he said.
"New terms."
His face went still.
"Is this where you tell me to go?"
"It's where I tell you what I want, and then you tell me what you want."
I read it out, in my flattest voice.
"One. I captain. That doesn't change."
"Agreed."
"Two. You may touch the flight deck, if I say so."
His brows rose.
