Chapter 16: My Terms

Shiori didn't speak to him in the car.

Sakaki drove, and Tatsuya sat in the front beside him for the first time since she had known him.

She sat in the back with her arms folded.

Nobody said anything for forty minutes.

In the penthouse, she walked into the middle of the front hall, where the marble gleamed under the pendant lights, and turned around.

He had stopped at the door.

"Kneel," she said.

It was the voice she used in court, when a witness was lying.

He looked at her for a moment.

Then Tatsuya Kuzunoki, who had never knelt to a man in his life, got down on both knees on the cold stone of his own hall, in his white shirt and his trousers, and put his hands on his thighs.

"Sakaki," she said.

"Madam."

"Go home."

The door closed behind him.

Shiori took her jacket off and hung it on the hook and walked around her husband in a slow circle with her shoes clicking.

"I'm going to ask questions," she said. "You're going to answer all of them. If you lie, I'll know."

"Yes."

"How long have you been planning this?"

"Two years. The marriage, eight months."

"What happens to you in the end?"

"I testify."

"And?"

"I've done things for him," said Tatsuya, evenly. "I've collected money. I've broken men's bones. I was in the room with the bar owner. I won't hide behind my father's name." His eyes held hers. "I'll take whatever the court gives. It will be years."
