Chapter 14: The Jury
The Wall went dark on the rule, and the five of them looked at me.
"Well," One said, and rubbed his big hands together. "Nobody wanted lunch anyway."
Nobody laughed.
Three made sandwiches at two and nobody ate them.
Nick spent the afternoon on the balcony, as far from my square as the balcony went.
At nine the men in black masks came out of the steel door with a chair.
They set it on the carpet under the Wall, facing the couch, and went back through the door.
I sat in it.
The five of them sat on the long couch across from me, a jury in black jerseys.
One was on the end, with his arm along the back of the couch.
Eighteen sat beside him with her knees pulled up.
Then Three, then Five with her reading glasses on their beaded chain, and Nick at the far end.
The Wall lit.
"The house tries Fourteen for camera 31," Garson Langan said. "Fourteen may speak first."
I'd decided upstairs that I wasn't going to beg.
