Chapter 39: Tern Island Again
The last Saturday in June came in clear and bright, with a west wind that smelled of cut grass and salt.
The ferry made three runs to Tern Island, and every one was full.
I stood in the anteroom of the island chapel in a dress I had chosen myself.
It was plain ivory linen, with sleeves to the elbow and a skirt that let me walk, and there were pockets.
I had put my father's pencil in one of them.
The wall between me and the vestry was one layer of beadboard.
I could hear everything.
"Is the ring in your pocket?" the bearded lobsterman was saying.
"Yes."
"Which pocket?" the lobsterman said.
"The left."
"Check again," the lobsterman said.
"It's in the left pocket," Ansel said. "I checked it four times."
"Check a fifth. I'll be right here."
I put my hand over my mouth to hold in the laugh.
Someone knocked at the anteroom door, three short raps, and Fern came in.
