Chapter 13: Gone
I rode the T home with the banana in my fist and did not eat it.
My apartment was one room on the third floor, and it smelled like toast and hot dust.
The good chair stood by the window, where I had put it the day I moved in.
The radiator clanked twice, the way it did when it wanted attention.
On the sill stood the trophies from the years I would not look at, every one of them face down.
I sat in the chair with my coat still on.
I opened the temp agency's portal on my laptop and typed, Available Monday, any assignment.
It was the easiest sentence I knew, because I had written it forty times.
I did not hit send.
At nine o'clock someone knocked, three slow raps with a pause in the middle.
The buzzer downstairs had been dead since June, so nobody ever knocked.
I opened the door on Gus Pomeroy, out of uniform for the first time since I had known him.
