I sat back down on the edge of the booth.
Not all the way.
Just enough to hold on to the table.
"When?" I said.
"He's waiting for the baby," Tori said. "He said a newborn photographs better. He'll file before that, so it's in the paper all fall."
"Why are you telling me?"
She looked at her bare hands again.
"Because he cut me off with a text," she said. "Twelve years with you, and one year with him, and he's the one who sent a text."
I didn't say anything kind.
I didn't say anything cruel either.
I stood up, and I said, "Thank you, Tori," because it was true.
Then I walked out past the turning pie case.
Matt was out of the truck before I reached the curb.
He looked at my face and opened the passenger door without a word.
I told him on the highway.
He drove with both hands on the wheel for ten miles.
"He doesn't even want him," he said finally.
"No."
"He wants a picture of himself holding him."
"Yes."
Matt was quiet another mile.
"Then we make sure the judge sees the difference," he said.
