Gi-cheol was gone, but he had left the folder on the low table.
"Bank wires," he had said. "Hwan Marine Trading to a private account, October 1998. Two billion won. Then nine more payments over twenty years."
Do-yoon pulled his trousers up with shaking hands.
His shirt hung open and his glasses were gone.
He had never in his life felt so naked.
He picked up the folder and turned the pages.
They were exactly what Gi-cheol had said.
He put it down.
"Do-yoon," Jae-wook said.
"Don't."
"I didn't know."
"Your family paid mine in secret for twenty years," Do-yoon said, and his voice rose.
"And tonight you stood in front of four hundred people and said you intended to lose to me for the rest of your life."
"I meant it."
"What were you paying for?"
"I don't know!"
Jae-wook took a step toward him and stopped.
His face was grey.
"Look at me. You've watched me for six years. When have I ever lied to you?"
Do-yoon opened his mouth.
He couldn't think of a time.
That was what hurt.
