"I wrote four pages," Do-yoon said. "I'm leaving them in my pocket."
"Every line in them was a defense, and I don't need one here."
His voice carried across the planks and the water, steady and a little rough.
"You were right to call me cold. I was. I thought a man who gave nothing away couldn't lose anything."
"You taught me that was a very expensive way to live."
"I promise to give you the bad news first."
"I promise to let you win at chess once a year, and to say so out loud."
The pier laughed.
"I promise to put the work down when you ask me to. I promise to ask you to put yours down too."
He swallowed.
"And I promise that when I wake up in the morning, the first thing I will think is your name."
"I have done it for months."
"I plan to keep it up."
Jae-wook's eyes were running openly.
He didn't wipe them.
"I didn't write any," he said hoarsely. "I told Se-ra I'd just wing it. She nearly killed me."
"Say it anyway."
"I've been in love with you since the harbor lease. I didn't have the nerve to say it, so I kept beating you at auctions."
"That's the worst strategy I've ever heard."
"It worked."
The chairs rocked with laughter and sniffles.
Jae-wook's voice dropped, and the whole pier leaned in.
"My grandfather spent fifty-two years in a house by the sea where he could only be himself eleven days a year."
