Chapter 14: Waiting
Rafe's POV
I told her I wouldn't follow her, and I kept the promise in the only way that left me a way to breathe.
I did not follow her in.
I sat in the lot of a marina diner for four hours with the engine off.
I watched the road to a white building whose corner I could just see.
The coffee was bad.
I drank three cups of it and ordered nothing else.
A waitress came out to the car once and asked whether I was waiting for someone.
"My wife," I said.
I had not said it that way before, to a stranger, with no one to hear it but a girl with a coffeepot.
She went back inside, and I sat with the word.
The night before, after Camille went up to the east bedroom, I had gone down to the music room.
I had opened the safe behind the piano.
I had taken out the pistol and set it on the lid of the upright, on the wood where she had lain.
I sat and looked at it until the shutters went grey.
It was a short .38 I had meant for Julien Beaumont since the night he walked into the reception.
I knew exactly how it would go.
A drive to the coast, a door, a few minutes, and a boat that went out into the Sound and came back empty.
