Chapter 13: Gulfport

I did not answer him that night.

I went up to the east bedroom, and for the first time I locked the door from my side.

I lay awake until the shutters went grey.

At six I came down the back stairs in jeans.

Rafe was in the kitchen with a cup of coffee he had not drunk.

He had not been to bed either.

His shirt was the same one, rolled to the elbows and creased across the back.

"I want to go to Gulfport," I said. "Alone."

"Sal will drive."

"Sal can drive. You stay here."

He set the cup down.

"I said I wouldn't follow you."

"Then don't."

I crossed the kitchen and stood close enough to smell the cedar on his collar.

He did not touch me, because he had told me the choice was mine, and he was keeping to it with his whole body.

His hands stayed flat on the counter, and the tendons stood out in his wrists.

I put my palm on his chest, over his heart, and left it there.

"I'll be back before dark," I said.

"Camille."

"What?"

"Nothing." His jaw moved. "Take the coat."

I took the coat.

The drive east was long and flat, with the bayous going by on both sides and the sun coming up pink over the water.

Sal did not talk, and I was grateful.

At the Mississippi line he passed me his thermos without turning his head.
