Chapter 12: The Cake Box
Odette sat in the formal dining room under the chandelier with her gloves in her lap and her hat on.
Rafe had put on a robe over his trousers, and I had pulled on his white shirt.
Neither of us had said anything about the hour.
The box sat on the polished table between us, white cardboard, tied with red string.
"It is a king cake," Odette said. "From your own shop, Camille. I bought it on Saturday. I thought we might share it, as a family."
"It's midnight, Mama Odette."
"Grief keeps no hours."
She looked at Rafe for the first time.
"Mr. Castellane, I have a proposal. I withdraw my complaint, and Julien withdraws his petition. The Society will be told it was a misunderstanding. Your lease on the hall is safe, and I will see to it that no one in the Society ever says one word against you."
"In exchange for what?" Rafe asked.
"Camille comes home."
She said it to the tablecloth.
"The marriage was a business arrangement, and the business is finished. The marker was cleared. Julien is alive, and the debt is a dead man's debt no longer." Her hands tightened in her lap. "Let her go back to Ursulines Avenue to her husband, and I'll make it worth your while."
"Worth my while," Rafe said softly.
"Whatever you want."
I laughed.
I couldn't help it.
It was a short, ugly sound, and Odette's head jerked up.
"You want me to go back," I said. "To a man who let me bury a box of sand."
"To your husband," Odette said.
