Chapter 22: New Bed
The tub had a ring of steam over it, and I was lying back against his chest in water up to my collarbones.
It was an old clawfoot Iris had found at a salvage yard in Westbrook, and Jude and the deckhand had hauled it up the stairs on Wednesday with a great deal of swearing.
The old bed was gone.
It had gone out through the window on a rope, in pieces, and into the back of a truck bound for the dump.
The new one had come from a maker in Gorham, and it stood in the next room with plain sheets and a white iron frame.
It had been there four hours, and no one had slept in it.
Posy was at Iris's.
Nobody was across the hall.
"You're quiet," Jude said.
His voice rumbled in his chest, against my back.
"I'm counting the lights on the water," I said.
"The window's steamed."
"Then I'm imagining them."
He laughed softly, and his arms tightened around me.
One hand held a washcloth.
He dragged it in slow lines up my arm and over my shoulder, and the water streamed down after it.
"When I was a boy," he said, "my father let me sleep on the boat in a gale.
"I thought I'd be sick.
"But the whole boat rocked me, and I slept like I'd never slept.
"That's what you feel like."
"A gale?"
"The sea under me.
"I'm not afraid of anything with you in my arms."
I turned my head and kissed his jaw, wet and bearded.
"Say that again, when I've got you tied to the bed."
"Is that the plan?" he asked.
"That's the plan."
"Then I should tell you, I've been thinking about it all day."
He dropped the washcloth and put both hands on my breasts under the water.
His thumbs moved over my nipples, round and round, slow, until I arched and the water slopped against the tub.
