Chapter 24: Tab Twelve
On the Sunday after, Birch Street ate supper in the road.
Elspeth had set the date, and the street had spent a week making it true.
The tables ran from her driveway to the end of the block, a dozen of them, end to end, with every kind of cloth.
Dell Street had come back across the tracks on Thursday, and the Grange people had come back to help on Friday.
Nobody had asked anyone to leave since.
I stood at the head of the first table with a clipboard and counted chairs.
"Ninety-one," I said.
"Ninety-three," said Lucy, not looking up.
"I count ninety-one."
"There are two on the lawn. One has a goat on it."
I looked at the lawn.
The goat was sitting in a folding chair, with the dignity of a person who has been given one.
I put the clipboard down on the table.
I did not pick it up again.
The dishes filled the long table.
There were forty-four of them on the long table, every one with a strip of masking tape, in Elspeth's four-line system.
I read the first row.
