Chapter 8: Royce
Arlo came out of the barn before the truck had stopped rolling.
He walked up to Hoyt's window and spoke low, but I was sitting right there.
"Tracks again last night," he said.
"They stop at the bunkhouse steps."
My stomach turned over.
"At the bunkhouse?" I said.
"Something came to where I sleep?"
"That's why Dub sits the porch," Hoyt said.
He put his hand on the back of my neck, large and warm, and held it there.
"Nothing gets past him."
Then the Dually rolled into the yard behind us with its lights off, and the gravel crunched under its tires.
I knew the sound of that truck.
It had stopped at my front door in Amarillo a week ago.
Three men got out.
The one in front wore a clean pearl-snap shirt and boots that had never seen a corral.
He was twenty-nine, sandy-haired and good-looking, and he had a smile I would have known anywhere.
It was Royce Loving, the Amarillo alpha's son.
