Chapter 15: The Ashfall Trial

Marit's POV

Hallvard came up the stairs at the exact moment Linnea needed him.

I heard his boots on the landing and saw her hear them too.

She did not look afraid.

She looked like a woman putting on a coat.

By the time he reached the doorway, her shoulders had folded and her chin had begun to shake, and a tear was already running down her cheek.

"Uncle," she whispered. "They've found my medicine, and they say it's poison."

Hallvard took in the vial in my hand, the letter in Anders's, and the girl swaying in front of the dresser.

Not one muscle in his kind face moved.

"Nephew," he said gently. "I think we had better take this to the Moon Hall."

"Yes," Anders said. "We had."

I thought Hallvard would try to talk his way out of the room.

He didn't.

He wanted the whole pack to hear it.

By evening, the long hall was full again, three hundred wolves along the log walls, the same ones who had watched me write Linnea's name.

The three elders sat behind the Council table.

Linnea was given a chair by the stove and a blanket for her knees.

Anders read the letter aloud.

When he finished, a woman at the back began to cry.

Hallvard rose slowly.

"That is not my hand," he said.

"It's your hand," Anders said. "I learned my letters from it."

"It is a good copy. Whoever made it knew me well." Hallvard looked straight at me. "Someone who spent a week in my house, who was offered my kindness, and who has wanted my nephew's seat since the day she refused to sign a name she'd been given."
