I Rejected the Firefighter Who Died for Me, Now I Chase Him novel · Chapter 23 of 24
Chapter 23: The Second Picnic
In May the Han River was green and loud with cyclists, and Seo-won brought a blanket with no plan at all.
It was a plain cotton one, faded blue, and Tae-min weighted all four corners with his boots, his keys, a water bottle, and one sandwich.
"Where's the legend?" he said.
"I didn't make one."
"Where's the wind direction?"
"The wind goes where it wants."
Tae-min put a hand to his chest and fell backward onto the blanket as though shot.
"Who are you? What have you done with the architect?"
Seo-won sat down beside him and took a tuna sandwich out of a paper bag.
He had cut it into triangles, badly.
It was a Sunday, and he had not missed a Tuesday since the cafe.
The bench outside the station had a worn patch on it now, where they sat.
He had a job of his own too, in two small rooms in Yeonnam-dong.
He drew doors for a woman who corrected him all day and paid him almost nothing.
He had never been happier at anything.
A gull landed at the edge of the blanket and looked at them with one yellow eye.
"It's him," Tae-min whispered. "It's the brie thief."
"It can't be the same gull."
"It's the same gull. It remembers you."
Seo-won reached into the bag.
He took out a wedge of brie, wrapped in paper, and broke it in two.
He tossed one half onto the stones, and the gull seized it and strutted off.
"You bought it on purpose."
"Forty thousand won. I've been owed an apology."
Tae-min laughed until he cried.
Then the ants came, in an organized column, in perfect formation, straight up the corner of the blanket.
