Chapter 14: The Empty House

Nikos's POV

Her mug was still on the drying rack when I went back into the kitchen.

It was the blue one with the chip in the handle, and I had been washing it by hand every morning for ten days.

I stood and looked at it for a long time.

Then I took my keys and drove to my grandmother's house, because there was one thing left that I could still do for her.

Yiayia let me in without a word.

She pointed up the stairs with a wooden spoon.

Yianni was sitting on the edge of the bed in our father's old room with his shoes on.

He looked up when I filled the door, and his face closed.

"She told you," he said.

"She told me nothing," I said. "She told you to say it yourself."

"I can't," he said.

"Wednesday, at eight. Two hundred men."

"Nik, I can't do it," he said. "They'll kill me."

"They will not," I said. "Hugh has given me his price."

"You don't know that."

"You work the hall's floor for a year, and you say it to their faces. Then it is finished."

"You don't know anything!" he said.

He stood and shoved me in the chest with both hands.

I did not move.

"You stood there with my gun," Yianni said, shaking. "You let her look at you like that. I didn't ask you to."

"No," I said. "You didn't."

I took him by the front of his shirt, not hard, and held him where he was.

"I have carried you since you were four years old," I said. "I did it gladly."

"Nik," Yianni said.

"I will not carry one more day of this."

"Then put me in the river!" he said.

"Look at me," I said.

He looked.

"She walked out my front door an hour ago," I said. "She did it because of a lie I told for you."

"Nik."

"And she still told you to stand on your own feet."

I let go of his shirt.

"If she can walk out of my house, you can walk into that hall."
