Chapter 14: Carlo's Table
Carlo wanted me at his supper table.
He sent a photograph of Ada beside an untouched bowl of soup.
Her coat was buttoned wrong, but her face was unhurt.
Matteo read the message over my shoulder.
"I'll go," he said.
"He wants you to. That's why he sent her face."
"She's my aunt."
"She became mine when I married you."
He watched me take my coat from the hook.
"You can't walk into his house alone."
"I won't be alone. Ada will be there."
He almost smiled at the answer, then saw I meant it.
At Carlo's house the dining room was set for three.
Gina stood behind Ada's chair with one hand on it.
Ada had not touched the soup.
"You finally came home," Carlo told me.
"This was never my home."
He pulled out a chair beside him.
