In June the sheriff's sale was called off, because there was no note left to foreclose.

The receiver looked at the loan to Marchant & Daughter and wrote it off in a single line.
The barn was mine, free and clear, for the first time since my grandfather bought it.
I took the new sign out of the truck bed on the last Saturday of the month.
A man in Ravenel who painted fire engines and church doors had made it.
It said MARCHANT & DAUGHTER AUCTIONEERS in plain gold letters on black, with a small gavel under the ampersand.
Anson held the ladder.
"Left," I said, from the top.
"It's level," Anson said.
"It's left," I said.
"Detty, I've been holding this thing for an hour."
"I'm the auctioneer," I said. "You're the ladder."
He laughed, down at the foot of it, with his head tipped back.
He laughed a good deal now, in a rusty, astonished voice, and every time I heard it I stopped what I was doing.
I hammered the last bracket and climbed down.
We stood in the gravel with our arms around each other and looked up at it.
It hung over the big door in the June sun, black and gold.
