Gunnar's POV
I knew the voice before I saw the man.
It came down the hall from the front door, level and cool, and it said, "Ms. Isaksen. Forgive me, I'm early."
I was standing at the kitchen counter with a dish towel in my hand.
My hands went cold.
Eleven years ago I had stood in the front hall of this house and looked at the floor.
I had said nothing then, and I had said nothing every Sunday since.
Jussi, beside the stove, stopped stirring.
Henrik, in the doorway, did not turn his head.
Marit's footsteps came back down the hall.
Behind her came a man in a camel overcoat, with a neat dark beard and a silver watch.
He carried a bottle of aquavit in one gloved hand.
He was eleven years older than the boy I remembered.
He had the same eyes.
"Gunnar," said Dag Lindroos.
"You've gone gray at the sides."
I put the towel down.
"Who is this?" Marit asked.
She looked at me, and then at the others, and I saw her read our faces.
