Chapter 19: The Hall
The Finnish Brotherhood hall smelled of coffee, wet wool and cardamom bread.
Two hundred people sat at long tables under strings of white lights, and the roof-fund thermometer on the stage stood at nine-tenths red.
I wore the black dress I had worn to bury my grandmother.
Henrik's hand rested at the base of my spine, and Gunnar's shoulder touched my shoulder.
Jussi walked on my other side with the envelope in his coat and his chin up.
When we sat, his fingers found mine under the table and held on.
Dag sat at the head table with the committee, in a dark suit, with a silver watch.
He saw us come in.
He lifted his glass an inch, and smiled.
At ten to midnight the chairman tapped a spoon on a bottle, and the room quieted.
"Before the new year," he said, "a word from our largest pledge, Mr. Lindroos, a member of this hall for twenty years."
Dag rose and buttoned his jacket.
"Thank you. I have been a guest of this town on and off for twenty years, and I want to say a word about a house on 15th Street."
My stomach dropped.
"Some of you ate at Ingrid Isaksen's table," Dag said.
