Chapter 19: The Bite
I didn't call the grant office.
I didn't call my lawyer.
I looked at the clock on the bunk room wall. Seven fourteen on a Tuesday.

I'd driven her there a hundred and fifty times.
Niall picked up on the first ring.
"I'm coming," he said, before I'd told him anything. "Where?"
"Charlestown. The rehab gym. I know which mat she'll be on."
The gym was on the second floor, all windows, with a view of the harbor and the old ships in the Navy Yard.
The woman at the desk looked up and broke into a smile.
"Maura! Where have you been? We thought you moved."
"Sort of," I said.
Kiera was at the parallel bars by the far window.
She was standing, braces locked on both legs, her arms shaking on the rails, her therapist behind her with a hand on her belt.
She looked strong. She'd worked hard for that. I'd watched her do it.
