Chapter 29: Graduation
On Saturday morning the Prendergast crew built a stage in my bay.
It was eight inches high and painted red.
One of the apprentices had stenciled ENGINE 19 on the front, with the 9 a little crooked.
"It's structural," Niall said.
"Everything you touch is structural."
"That's the job."
By ten the folding chairs were full and people were standing along the walls.
The families came, and the neighbors from Gibson Street who'd watched the cruiser in October.
The vet from Quincy came in a sweater with reindeer on it.
The aide sat in the front row, because I'd saved her a seat with a RESERVED sign on it.
My mother came in a church coat and sat next to her.
The grant officer came, and the committee chair with her half-glasses.
The city's photographer was the same woman who'd watched me get served.
"I kept them," she told me at the door. "The dated ones. Just in case."
Brendan stood at the back with his coin, out of the way.
