Chapter 28: The Mall Test
The evaluator let us have one retest.
"Thursday," she said in the parking lot. "South Shore Plaza, two o'clock. If she breaks again, she doesn't graduate this class."
"And the grant needs four teams."
"I know what the grant needs." She looked at Pepper, then at the boy wiping chicken grease on his coat. "I want her to pass. Make her pass."
The boy didn't say anything on the drive back.
At the firehouse he sat down in Pepper's run with his back against the gate and his knees up.
Pepper lay down against his shins.
"It was my fault," he said.
"It was the chicken's fault," Kerry said.
"I let the leash go loose. You said never let it go loose."
I crouched down in front of him.
"Pepper's two," I said. "She's a baby with a job. Babies mess up. Then they practice."
"How do you practice a chicken?"
Niall came in through the side door at six that night with four grocery bags.
He set them on the sawhorse desk one at a time.
