Chapter 27: Outside
Kiera rolled out of the hearing room first.
She was fast on those wheels. She always had been.
She went straight past her own cameraman and pushed the elevator button with the heel of her hand.
The two men in dark coats stepped up on either side of the doors.
"Kiera Lynch?" the older one said.
"I'm leaving."
"Ma'am, I'm a Boston police detective. You're under arrest for forgery, uttering a forged document, and larceny by false pretenses."
The hallway was full in seconds.
The families came out behind us, and the reporter from the council meeting.
The television cameraman backed up to get the shot.
Kiera's own phone was still clamped to her chair arm, streaming.
"You can't," she said. "Look at me. You can't arrest a woman in a wheelchair."
"Yes, ma'am, we can," the detective said. "We'll wait for an accessible van. Nobody's going to touch your chair."
He read her rights in a tired, even voice.
She talked over every line of it.
