Chapter 22: The Girlfriend
By Wednesday the whole town had a new word for me.
The girlfriend.
The woman at the drugstore said it when she rang up my vitamins, not quite under her breath.
A man in a golf shirt said it on the dock, pointing me out to his wife.
The news said it nicer.
"Ms. Dabney, the woman Mr. Kershaw married during his first wife's absence."
The pictures they used of me were from the airport stairs, with my ponytail and my Sallie's T-shirt.
The pictures they used of Mariel were from her wedding.
Wednesday afternoon she moved back into the house on East Battery.
Her lawyer got a judge to call it her home until the marriage question was settled.
The channel five van filmed her mother helping her up the porch steps.
The boxes Lawton had carried down three flights were carried right back up.
That same afternoon Lawton moved out.
He didn't stay one night under the same roof.
He put two duffel bags on Clancy's charter boat and slept in the cabin with his feet in the bait well.
