Chapter 17: The Whiteout

He came in out of the whiteout with snow packed in his eyebrows, and I had not heard a thing over the wind.

I was sitting on the middle bench of Mummu's sauna with a towel across my lap and the stove roaring.

The door banged shut behind him, and the storm went on howling at the logs.

"Mummu strung a rope from the house," Petroc said. "She told me where you were."

"You walked."

"The county plow quit at the Tapiola turn. I left the truck." His lips were blue. "It's four miles."

He stood just inside the door in his canvas coat, white to the knees, and he did not come any farther.

He did not ask me for one thing.

I got down from the bench.

I took hold of his coat and worked the frozen buttons through the holes, one after another.

My fingers were hot from the stones, and his coat had frozen stiff.

I pushed it off his shoulders.

It hit the floor with the snow still on it.

I pulled his sweater over his head and unlaced his boots and knelt to draw them off.

He did not help me, and he did not stop me.

He stood and shook with cold and let me do it.

His hands hung at his sides, red and white at the knuckles.

I took them both in mine.

They were frozen, and he winced.

"Can you feel that?" I said.

"Not much."

I drew his hands up under my towel and laid them between my thighs.

I shut my eyes.

The cold was a shock, and then it was something else.

His fingers were so cold they burned, and I felt him go still.

Then I felt him go hard against my hip through his wet pants.

"Marja," he said, thick.

"I'm warming you."

"That isn't what's happening."

"No," I said.

I let the towel drop.

I took his hands out and put them on my breasts, and he groaned out loud.

They warmed there, and slowly the stiff fingers began to move.

I dipped warm water from the bucket and poured it over his shoulders and down his chest.

The snow melted out of his hair and ran off him in streams.

I kissed the water from his collarbone.
