Chapter 16: Quarry Grey
Sorcha's POV
I went down to the gate in a borrowed coat with my hair unbound and my left hand open.
Caspian walked a step behind me.
He had promised not to speak for me, and he kept the promise with his whole body.
The gate stood open, and in the dark beyond it stood forty wolves.
They were men and women in quarry grey, with clay on their boots and their hands.
Some of them were older than my father, and some were children I had last seen at their mothers' skirts.
They were thinner than I remembered.
Nobody came in.
The wind took the torch flames and laid them flat.
A broad man at the front stepped out of the line.
He was missing two fingers on his right hand, and I knew the stump.
"Foreman," I said.
He looked at me for a long time.
"Miss Sorcha," he said at last. "You were small enough to ride my shoulders. You'd hold on by my ears."
"I remember."
"We buried what was left in the ash. We did not bury you."
"I'm here."
"So I see." His voice was rough. "The whole kingdom's heard it by now. The King's wife is alive, and she's standing in the King's yard with the King behind her."
"Yes."
"Then I'll say it plain, because your father would." He looked past me at Caspian. "Thirty of the Crown's wolves stood in our hall that night and let our Alpha be killed."
"They died there," Caspian said.
"They stood."
"Twenty-six of them burned with you."
"And four walked out," the foreman said. "Four. They said they didn't see a thing."
