Kit came down to breakfast at seven and found a card propped against his teapot.
It was cream, heavy, and written in fountain pen.
It said: Kit, you are the finest poisoner on British television.
Below it was a capital D with a flourish that had been practised.
Kit read the card twice, the way he read bills.
He had not slept.
He had spent the night on the edge of the bed with thirty-two reviews in his head.
He kept hearing a man read them aloud in a ballroom.
He took the pen from his jumper pocket and wrote under the flourish: Unsupported.
Then he drank his tea and waited for the next one.
It came at the morning briefing in the stable yard.
Forty crew stood in the cold with paper cups, and Vera was halfway through the call sheet when Dorian raised a hand.
"May I say something about Kit?" he said.
"No," said Kit.
"He is the stillest actor I have worked with," said Dorian, to the yard.
"He has a poisoner's hands. They know exactly what they are doing, and they never apologise."
