Chapter 21: The Receipt
I didn't take the receipt.
I looked at it in her hands.
"Come in," I said. "You're letting the cold in."
My mother stepped into my room and stopped.
She looked at the mattress on the floor.
At the hot plate. The one pan. The one mug.
At Judd, who had pulled on his jeans and nothing else, with a fresh bandage on his thigh showing through a rip in the denim.
She looked at all of it.
"Sit down, Regina," Judd said.
He gave her the one chair.
I sat on an upturned milk crate.
Judd filled the pan with water and put it on the hot plate for coffee, because there was nowhere else to heat it.
Nobody said anything while it boiled.
He made one cup in the one mug, cream, no sugar, and put it in her hands.
She held it and didn't drink.
"He came in at two," she said. "I was awake. I haven't slept since the hall."
