Chapter 9: Mrs. Ransome
The penthouse door had not finished closing when he lifted me off my feet.
"Mrs. Ransome," he said against my mouth.
"Say it again."
"Mrs. Ransome."
The judge had said it forty minutes ago, in a room with fluorescent lights and a flag.
Abel and Dani were our only witnesses, and Dani cried openly into a paper napkin.
Cal had said it in the car.
He had said it twice in the elevator.
Now he said it into my throat, and I felt it in my knees.
I was still in my white dress, a short silk thing with thin straps.
My engagement ring sat next to the new gold band he had put on my hand.
I could feel both of them against the back of his neck, where my fingers were clasped.
He had my thighs.
He held me up with his forearms under my thighs and my back against the front door.
My legs were wrapped high around his waist.
His stitches had come out on Tuesday, at my kitchen table, and I had checked the scar with my thumb myself.
He had no trouble carrying me.
"You said you were going to be careful," I said.
"I am being careful."
"You're not."
"I'm being careful with you. Not with the door."
I laughed, and he kissed me.
The kiss went on and on.
It was deep and wet and slow, and his beard dragged on my chin.
He pushed his hips against me until I felt him hard through his suit trousers, right where I ached.
"Take me to bed," I said.
"No."
"No?"
"Not yet."
His hand slid up under my skirt.
It found the bare skin of my hip, and then the lace of my underwear, and he hooked one finger in it and tore.
The sound was shocking.
I gasped and he looked at me, with his eyes black, and held up a scrap of white lace.
"I'll buy you another," he said.
