Chapter 12: Live

By nine the plaza in front of Crane Tower was full of Howling Bay.

I watched them from the fifty-ninth floor with a cup of ginger tea going cold in my hands.

There were forty or fifty of them, in grey fleece vests, holding phones up at the glass.

Jared stood on the front steps with Bree at his elbow, and a small crowd of wolves with cameras.

He was streaming to the pack channel.

I could see the little red dot on his phone.

"I'll handle it," Dashiell said behind me.

"No."

"Wynne."

"They want a girl in tears," I said. "I'd like them to see something else."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he took his coat off the back of the chair.

"I'll be beside you," he said. "I won't speak unless you ask."

We went down together.

When the doors of the tower opened, the plaza went quiet.

Jared turned on the steps with his phone held high and a face full of sorrow.

"Friends," he said, in a ringing voice. "I wanted you all to hear this from me. The woman I loved is carrying a child."

A murmur went through the crowd.

"My child," said Jared. "Our child. And I won't let a rich man steal my family from me."

He held out a hand to me, trembling.

"Come home, Wynne. We'll raise it together. Mother has forgiven everything."

I walked down the steps until I was one below him.

I took out my own phone, and I held it up beside his.

"Good morning," I said. "Since we're all live, let's do this properly."
