Chapter 24: This Morning
The dock was gray wood, and it ran forty feet out over the lake.
I got there at sunset in jeans and my grandmother's coat, with the sapphire on my right hand.
Harrison was at the far end with his sleeves rolled and his tie gone.
He had brought two folding chairs and then decided not to sit in either.
"You came," he said.
"You asked where you could see the water."
The light on the lake was orange and then pink, and the first lantern on the shore came on behind us.
He took a breath.
"I wrote you a contract in a diner," he said. "It was a good contract. It had an end date."
"It did."
"I would like to tear it up."
He took the folded sheet out of his back pocket, with the blue heart still in the margin, and he held it out to me.
I took it.
"I'm not going to ask you to stay for a year," he said. "I'm going to ask you to stay with no end date, if you want to. And if you don't, I'll still keep my word on everything I said."
I looked at the page.
"I have terms," I said.
"I assumed."
"First, no separate bedrooms. I'm tired of walking down the hall."
"Agreed."
"Second, you tell me what you know the day you know it. If it's bad news, if it's kind news, if you think it will hurt me. The same day."
"Yes."
"Third, I can leave any day. That stays."
