Chapter 17: Not Forgiven
Eli stood in his own doorway in bare feet and did not step aside.
"You don't get to say it for me," he said.
"I know."
"You don't get to say it for me, and you don't get to be sorry at me until I ask."
"Yes."
Rain ran off Declan's chin.
"I'm not forgiving you," Eli said. "That's not a thing that happens on a doorstep at three in the morning."
"I'm not asking you to."
"No touching. No begging. No gifts. If you bring me coffee, I'll pour it on the pavement."
"Understood."
"And you tell them with your own mouth. Not a letter, not a lawyer. Your mouth."
"My mouth," Declan said.
His mind was a flat white field, with one thought crossing it very slowly.
"Thank you for giving me terms. Thank you for letting me stand here."
Eli closed the door.
He put his forehead against it for a full minute.
Then he went upstairs and lay on his bed and did not sleep.
On Monday the war room had a new floor plan.
Eli's chair sat at the window.
Declan's sat at the far wall beside the door, and the plot table lay between them.
