Chapter 17: Gold Coast
The gulls screamed over the end of the pier.
"August thirtieth," I said.
"Same night."
"What time's the plane?"
"Ten-forty. From LAX."
The showcase started at eight.
We both did the math. Neither of us said it.
"Go," I said.
He blinked. "What?"
"Go. You have to go. That's the biggest job anybody's ever offered you."
"I haven't said anything yet."
"You don't need to. I'm saying it for you."
His face closed.
"Don't," he said.
"Lennon, I'm not going to be the reason you..."
"Don't do that." He pushed off the rail. "You read me everything. Every script. Every text from my dad. Don't read me this one."
"I'm trying to help."
"You're trying to decide." His voice went up, and two fishermen looked over. "You decided I'd be your lead. You were right, fine. You decided we'd hide. Forty minutes. Now you're deciding I go to Australia, so you don't have to hear me say I want to stay."
That hit somewhere under my ribs.
"Do you want to stay?" I said.
"I don't know yet!"
He'd never yelled at me.
